An
elementary-aged female attending a specialized development center for
severely emotionally disturbed students created this painting after 18
months of art therapy. Initially non-verbal and mistrustful, she would
make noises, demand silence during sessions and fill countless pieces of
drawing paper with superfluous images made from stamps. She was always
encouraged and acknowledged with comments such as, "I see you doing
that…I hear you." She gradually became more trusting and
responded to more structured art tasks. As time passed her eye contact
improved and her imagery became more realistic. She is now beginning to
make verbal associations to the imagery and communicating them to the
art therapist.
